Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering, University College Dublin, Ireland

University College Dublin invites applicants for the post of Assistant Professor in the School of Civil Engineering.

The School of Civil Engineering is a leader in both research and education in civil engineering in Ireland.

This position is a one-year contract to lecture and conduct research in civil engineering.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate abilities in the following areas:

Teaching and Learning – The successful candidate will be expected to deliver and lead a number of modules across the School’s programmes. These modules will be to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Research -The School actively encourages all academic staff to engage in research and places a strong emphasis on publication in leading civil engineering journals. The successful candidate will demonstrate a track record in research and publication.

Administration – The successful candidate will be expected to engage in such administrative and managerial duties as are appropriate to the role.

Appointment will be made on scale and in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively contribute to the graduate and undergraduate teaching programmes as directed by the Head of School.  Inter alia, this will involve module design and delivery, examination and assessment, quality assurance and enhancement, and associated administration.
  • Provide students with feedback in relation to examination performance, and evaluate performance in the professional and practical elements of the course.
  • Undertake and publish high quality research and scholarship in civil engineering.
  • Keep abreast of research and scholarship 
  • Make a significant contribution to the general administration of the Subject Area and the School
  • Contribute to the academic life of the Faculty and the University 
  • Contribute to the wider civil engineering community 
  • Undertake such other appropriate duties as directed by the Head of School in line with the contract of employment.

Selection Criteria: 

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post. 

Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

Mandatory:

  • PhD in civil engineering or related field.
  • A commitment to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • A strong commitment to research and publication of research in civil engineering.
  • An ability to design, manage and deliver modules across a range of areas.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

Desirable:

  • An interest in one of the School’s core research areas (Critical Infrastructure or Water Resources).
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Experience of research at the postdoctoral level.
  • Experience of teaching.
