Research Associate (postdoc) in the field of coastal sediment transport and morphodynamics, Germany
Forschungszentrum Küste (FZK) is a Joint Institution of Leibniz Universität Hannover and Technische Universität Braunschweig and one of the leading institutions in coastal research. The core facility of FZK is the Large Wave Flume (Großer Wellenkanal, GWK), which is one of the largest laboratory facilities of its kind worldwide.
For the assistance in national and international research projects we are seeking a
Research Associate (postdoc)
in the field of coastal sediment transport and morphodynamics. The position is full-time, limited to a duration of three years and shall be filled until 1st October 2016. The salary is based on the German Civil Service system for employees up to E 14 TV-L, depending on personal qualification.
Tasks and responsibilities:
The major focus will be to look into the details of transport processes of mixed sediments as well as the influence of plants (seagrass meadows or salt marshes) on sediment transport and morphodynamics. The investigations are based on large scale laboratory experiments in GWK, using state-of-the-art acoustical and optical measuring techniques (e.g. ADV, ABS, LIDAR). It is expected that the candidates will independently coordinate and carry out the planning and execution of the experiments as well as the processing and analysis of the measurement data. Further emphasis is on the numerical simulation of sediment- and morphodynamic processes and requires a good understanding about the use and potential improvement of corresponding numerical models (e.g. OpenFoam, XBeach, Delft3D). It is generally expected that every colleague plays an active part in all FZK activities and assists to set up new research proposals directed towards the further development of FZK.
Your profile:
The above tasks require a relevant experience and knowledge in the field of sediment transport and morphodynamics, which is documented by a PhD or equivalent achievements. Furthermore, advanced experience in the planning, execution and analysis of laboratory or field experiments and/or in numerical modelling is a requirement. The candidate is a communicative and team-oriented personality with a high ability to work independently and high problem-solving skills. Very good to excellent English or German skills (oral and written) are a prerequisite and knowledge of both languages is beneficial. Of candidates that do not speak German it is expected to acquire sound German skills within the first year of appointment.
