IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Scientific Software Engineers, Deltares, The Netherlands

Innovative

  • You use developments in IT and substantial knowledge in the field of soil and water, in creative ways, to come up with new software instruments. For example new developments in Data Science, or in Cloud Computing.
  • You accelerate and renew existing simulation models by using the latest opportunities in the IT field.
  • You explore the possibilities of developing new techniques for application in the field of delta technology.

Excellent

  • You have recently received your doctorate or you are a final phase, PhD student.
  • You are driven by content; a scientist (physicist) with knowledge of the latest developments in computer science, or a computer scientist with an affinity for the natural sciences.
  • You have experience in developing quality software in a scientific environment.

Working environment

Deltares is a research institute, specialized in the field of water, soil and infrastructure. Our organization has over 900 employees from 30 different countries. We have locations in Delft and Utrecht. Deltares makes knowledge applicable through high-quality, validated and user-friendly software. Our software is used worldwide by engineering firms, governments and research institutes for the simulation of processes in surface water, groundwater and soil. The results generated by the use of our software are applied in policymaking, operational management and evaluation. For example, we develop flood early warning systems.

The Deltares Software Centre develops for example numerical simulation software, where we make use of various techniques such as flexible grids, high performance computing, modelling frameworks and user interfaces. We focus on interactive modelling and new visualization techniques, with a short feedback loop to the end user. The collection and processing of data for prediction purposes, is therefore essential.

This specialized software development is teamwork. Our staff work with modern development techniques such as Agile, TDD and XP. The user interfaces are written in C#, the numerical simulation software in Fortran and early warning systems in Java. We use Python and C + +. The specialists from the various disciplines of Deltares are closely involved in the specification and validation of new software.

Further growth is possible, for example in the project team as scrum master, architect or project manager, but also to a higher position in research/science.
