Tenure track faculty position, University of South Carolina, USA

The College of Engineering and Computing at the University of South Carolina (USC) will be hiring over 40 faculty members at all ranks in the next four years. The College is seeking thought leaders in the cross cutting areas of cybersecurity, computational and data science and data learning, energy materials, soft materials (including multi-scale modeling and additive manufacturing), future fuels (including combustion, fuel design, biofuels, coal, catalysis, nuclear fuels, as well as energy policy), robotics and controls (including autonomy and process control), biomedical engineering (micro-analytical devices, development of disease markers), and engineering of ports and railroads. Successful applicants are expected to engage in interdisciplinary research, and participate in the development, implementation, and delivery of modern and timely curricula. Please send material to the indicated email address for each position below.

USC has launched the SCCyber Initiative in partnership with the state. The College seeks to expand its existing expertise in computer architecture, operating systems, and network security to the area of cyber security and embedded systems, including hardware security, trustworthy embedded systems, secure high performance computing, and safety, security, and reliability of cyber-physical systems and the Internet of Things. Intended number of positions: 2. Please send material to Cyber2017@cec.sc.edu

Computational and Data Science, and Machine Learning:
The University is significantly enhancing its high-performance computing capability, driving an expansion of research in computational and data science, and machine learning. Particular attention will be given to the development of scalable machine learning algorithms, causal inference using large-scale simulations and large datasets, data visualization, and uncertainty quantification as applied to various science and engineering fields. Intended number of positions: 2. Please send material to Computation2017@cec.sc.edu

Energy Materials and Soft Materials:
USC is building on existing strength in electrochemical energy storage and conversion, and functional materials research, including design, synthesis, and characterization of soft materials for applications such as batteries, fuel cells, supercapacitors, solar cells, photoactive and wide bandgap semiconductor materials and devices, along with multi-scale computational modeling of fundamental processes in energy conversion and storage. Development of these materials will be critical to innovation in a wide variety of existing basic and translational research fields such as direct energy transformation and energy storage. Intended number of positions: 2. Please send material to Energy2017@cec.sc.edu

Future Fuels:
Delivering clean, affordable, secure, and reliable energy requires holistic and multidisciplinary approaches. The College is expanding its existing strength in the area of "Future Fuel" technologies, covering combustion (experimental and simulations), fuel design, bio-fuels, clean coal, as well as catalysis for reformation. USC is also recognized for strength in advanced nuclear fuels and materials and has designed and built capabilities for experimental research as well as modeling and simulation. Successful candidates will have experience with a combination of laboratory experiments, characterization methods, modeling and simulation, or relevant policy matters. Intended number of positions: 1. Please send material to FutureFuels2017@cec.sc.edu

Robotics and Controls:
Pervasive sensing, high data rate communications, extensive data sets, and high performance computing permit ever-greater degrees of control over physical processes and systems. We seek applicants who can advance and apply these technologies in all domains, including autonomous vehicles, environmental monitoring, service robotics, and process controls. Also USC is part of a recently awarded DOE NNMI, focused on process intensification. The University seeks to further strengthen integrated scheduling and control, complex nonlinear dynamical system, and estimation and control of uncertain systems. Intended number of positions: 2. Please send material to Controls2017@cec.sc.edu

Port Engineering, and Railroad Engineering:
The College is building strength in the areas of multi-modal transportation and in infrastructure engineering (e.g. port, rail, waterway, or ocean engineering). The successful candidate will develop research and education programs that leverage the importance of ports and railroads in the state and the region. Intended number of positions: 1. Please send material to PortsRails2017@cec.sc.edu

The University is investing significantly in the College of Engineering and Computing. These investments enable the College to achieve its vision of producing liberally educated engineers and computer scientists who are exposed to, and engage in leading-edge fundamental and translational research. Being housed in a world-class comprehensive University, the College enjoys a strategic advantage for leading interdisciplinary research and education that makes a difference to society.

Continuing a strong tradition of engineering, dating to 1848, USC Engineering and Computing seeks candidates for multiple open-rank, tenured or tenure-track faculty positions. Successful candidates are expected to engage in funded research, teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and perform service for the institution and professional organizations. Each successful candidate will have appointment in one or possibly two departments, with one department identified as tenure home based on individual qualifications. Rank, tenure status, and compensation are contingent upon experience. An earned doctoral degree is a requirement.

The University of South Carolina is the flagship university of the state. It was founded in 1801, and is one of the nation’s oldest and most comprehensive public universities. Columbia, the seat of South Carolina government, was ranked byLivability.com as the third best college town in 2016. The temperate climate, the family friendly and resurgent city, the proximity to the beaches and mountains, and the traditions and beauty of the historic University with forward-leaning benefits and practices, provide for a high quality of life. The strategic investments of the state over the past two decades in automotive, aerospace, energy, and manufacturing areas provide ample opportunity for collaboration with industry.

Applicants should submit one complete PDF file that includes a cover letter, CV, teaching statement, research statement, and names and contact information for at least three references to the email addresses provided for each position. Questions about the positions in this advertisement should be directed to the same addresses as well.
