Post-doc: Flood Forecasting Using Data from Citizen Observatories, Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands
This post-doc position is part of the EU-funded project "FloodCitiSense" which aims to develop an early warning service for urban pluvial floods for and by citizens and city authorities, through establishment of citizen observatories.

The main tasks of the candidate will be to establish and implement a low-cost, smart sensor monitoring network for pluvial floods through citizen observatories in the city of Rotterdam, using state-of-the-art, low-cost, low-energy sensors and communication protocols (LoRa technology, Internet of Things [IoT] solutions). He/she will use high resolution data and innovative data assimilation techniques for non-conventional sensors (smart sensors, citizen observations and feedback) to improve simulation and understanding of urban hydrological response. The final aim is to develop a fast and accurate data-driven urban pluvial flood forecasting system based upon rainfall and runoff critical thresholds, derived from the improved urban hydrological modelling.

We are looking for a candidate with a doctoral degree in Environmental Engineering, Earth Sciences or Applied Physics and an affinity for computer science and technology. The candidate is expected to publish her/his research in scientific journals and conferences. The candidate should be capable of performing independent research and working in a team on research projects. The researcher should have an open personality and good English language skills to closely cooperate with colleagues, students, local stakeholders and international project partners.
