IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Doctoral candidate position, Aalto University, Finland

We seek a qualified and highly motivated individual with enthusiastic attitude towards research in the rapidly developing field of environmental hydraulics and environmentally sound hydraulic engineering. The fully-funded position is for a period of 1+3 years, and available to start in September 2017 (negotiable).

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will work in a project titled “Controlling transport of nutrients by means of environmental two-stage channels”. Two-stage or compound channels, consisting of a main channel and a vegetated floodplain, are expected to offer ecologically and economically advantageous potential to increase the resilience against floods while reducing the pollution of water bodies. The primary objective of this research is to investigate how vegetated two-stage channels can be used to improve water quality through managing sediment and nutrient processes. To support the optimal design and management of such channels, the research will specifically focus on the mixing, transport and retention processes of particulate and dissolved substances in vegetated flows.  The work is methodologically based on laboratory flume experiments, field investigations, and modelling. The research is instructed by Dr. Juha Järvelä and Dr. Kaisa Västilä, and supervised by prof. Harri Koivusalo.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a completed (or a nearly completed) Master of Science degree in a related field (engineering or natural sciences). Knowledge on fluvial environments, (environmental) hydraulics or fluid mechanics is required. Proficiency in experimental methods (e.g. laboratory flume investigations) is considered an asset. The applicant must fulfil the requirements for entitlement to do doctoral studies in the Doctoral Programme in Engineering (see http://bit.ly/2qPempk and http://bit.ly/2deINjC).

Research environment: The successful candidate will work within a team of senior and postdoc researchers and doctoral students led by Professor Harri Koivusalo. The topics of the team broadly cover water resources management issues ranging from computational description of hydro-meteorological processes in different land use types to design of environmentally preferable channels (http://bit.ly/2qISQ9M).

Contract terms: The starting monthly salary for the position is 2400 euros and follows the university salary system. The contract including occupational healthcare is first made for one year, and the extension is subject to advance of studies and research.

To apply: All material should be in English and submitted in a single PDF file. Applications must include:

1. Motivation Letter with a summary of previous research experience (master thesis for example) and a statement explaining the suitability of the candidate for the position (max two pages)

2. CV including possible publications and contact information for two reference persons (max two pages)

3. A copy of master´s and bachelor´s degree certificate and official transcript of records with courses and grades (grade requirements: http://bit.ly/2cBUrqT)

The application should be submitted through the eRecruitment system (link on http://www.aalto.fi/en/about/careers/jobs/view/1368/) no later than Wednesday June 28, 2017. For further information, please contact Dr. Juha Järvelä (juha.jarvela[at]aalto.fi).
