IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

PhD position, University of Hawaii at Manoa, US

The Computational Hydrogeology and Uncertainty Quantification Lab at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (https://www2.hawaii.edu/~jonghyun/) is seeking applications for a PhD student (or exceptional MS student) in computational hydrogeology with an emphasis on variably saturated density-driven groundwater flow and reactive transport simulation in high performance computing (HPC) environment. Applicants with a quantitative background on applied linear algebra and statistics, and experience in C++/Fortran/Python/Julia programming will be given preference.

Successful candidate will support the NSF EPSCoR ‘Ike Wai project (https://www.hawaii.edu/epscor/) aimed at addressing the grand challenge of water sustainability in Hawaii. As a part of the project, numerical models will be integrated with hydro-geophysical and biogeochemical datasets for subsurface flow and reactive transport in Hawaiian aquifers. Research goals for this position include 1) development and software release of flow and reactive transport model capable of large-scale simulation in HPC environment, 2) assimilation of geophysics and geochemistry dataset into the numerical model to assess the sustainability of aquifers in Hawaii. The PhD student will join the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Water Resources Research Center at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and is expected to work collaboratively with colleagues in NSF EPSCoR ‘Ike Wai project. HPC facility and travel are supported

Interested applicants should email a CV, transcripts, and a one-page statement of past and present research goals to Dr. Jonghyun Harry Lee (lee.group.application@gmail.com). Informal inquiries are also invited by email. Review of applications starts immediately and will continue until positions are filled.
