IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Fully-funded 3 year PhD studentship: ‘ Pollution, plastics and plumes: Understanding the behaviour of microplastics in aquatic sediments’, Brighton and Southampton Universities, UK
Applications are open for a fully funded 3 year PhD studentship which will be jointly supervised by Brighton and Southampton Universities.
299 million tonnes of plastic is produced annually with a significant proportion of that being as microplastics. Although plastics, and particularly microplastics, are now globally ubiquitous and are found in freshwater to deep marine environments, there is a paucity of research focused on microplastics in freshwater systems.  However it is vital to quantify their persistence since they pose significant risks to human and environmental health.

Within river channels, the sediment bed potentially mediates microplastic transfers. During flood events, erosion of the riverbed means microplastics buried within the bed could be re-mobilised, but we have very little understanding of the mechanisms by which this may occur. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to use a combined field, laboratory and modelling approach to generate a new quantitative understanding of the effect of flood events on microplastic remobilisation.
