IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

PhD@DICAM programme University of Bologna, Italy
The Region Emilia-Romagna (Italy) will support a number of PhD positions for the development and application of novel technologies in association with Industry. Some of these positions will be developed in the framework of the PhD Programme of the University of Bologna in Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering (i.e., PhD@DICAM). Within these opportunities at PhD@DICAM, motivated and outstanding candidate will be eventually selected for the developing of his/her research on the application of imaging techniques (e.g. Large Scale Particle Image Velocimetry) and acoustic techniques (e.g. Ultrasonic Velocity Profilemeter and Acoustic Doppler Current Profilemeter) to a set of fluvial hydraulics problems such as the continuous monitoring of flow discharge and the estimation of sediment transport. These are fundamental parameters for the numerical simulation of river morphodynamics at the scale of engineering works that is crucial for a variety of practical purposes (e.g., flood protection, river bridges maintenance, hydropower, sustainable use of water resources). The research programme will be carried at the Hydraulics Laboratory of the University of Bologna under the supervision of Prof. Irene Daprà and Dr. Massimo Guerrero. Part of the research programme will be developed in association with some private contractors with interested in the R&D of innovative solutions for river monitoring.

Candidates are expected to have a background in fluid mechanics and some knowledge about signal processing/instrumentation; Knowledge of Matlab and/or other programming language are an asset.
