A postdoctoral position is open at Ifremer (Brest) on the following topic : Physical environmental statusThe Marine Strategy Framework Directive aims at observing and evaluating the environmental status of marine and coastal waters, to preserve or reach a good environmental status. The objective of the FP7 SeasEra-C MERMAID project is to make a review of existing knowledge and available tools related to the MSFD goal and to develop indicators relevant to the description of the marine environment. The postdoctoral research project focuses on the physical description of the marine environment in a pilot site: the Gulf of Lions. The candidate will be in charge of confronting model results (MARS3D) to new/recent in situ observations, and will analyse model results over the last ten years to estimate the spatial distribution and temporal variability of the main physical parameters such as currents, waves, temperature, salinity, turbidity and bed sediment distribution. Next the candidate will make a review of existing marine and coastal physical indicators, and elaborate and evaluate key indicators for the estimating the marine environmental status.
Applicants should have a background in physical (coastal) oceanography and numerical modelling. Experience on sediment dynamics modelling would be regarded as particularly beneficial.
