Graduate Research Assistantship in Coastal Engineering. Texas AM University at Galveston, US

Coastal Engineering / Sediment Transport
Specific objectives:
Numerical modeling of barrier island morphodynamics.
Field pod deployments to measure Gulf and Bay hydrodynamics and sediment transport parameters to support the modeling process.
Funding (stipend and tuition) is available for a Ph.D. or M.S. student by way of a research assistantship (GAR) provided by the Maritime Systems Engineering Department (MASE), Texas A&M University at Galveston. Funding is currently guaranteed for two years and will be renewable after that term if necessary, pending satisfactory performance and availability of funds. The graduate student will be enrolled in the Ocean Engineering Program of the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University and conduct their thesis research on Texas A&M’s Galveston campus as part of the Ocean Engineering degree program. The successful applicant will be working with Dr. Jens Figlus in Galveston and be co-advised by a faculty member in the Ocean Engineering Department at College Station.
The graduate student will be fully engaged in a Texas Sea Grant / NOAA funded research project investigating the complex morphodynamics of barrier islands through a combination of process-based numerical modeling and field measurements from strategic pod deployments in the Gulf of Mexico and the Bay. The student will also have the opportunity to enhance his/her teaching abilities by assisting Dr. Figlus with undergraduate engineering classes/labs.
The student should have an interest in coastal sediment transport issues and hydrodynamic instrumentation. Prior exposure to numerical modeling of sediment transport is an advantage. Fortran and Matlab programming skills are a plus. The anticipated start date is Spring 2014.
