IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Funded 3 years PhD position in "numerical modeling of waves generated by subaerial landslides" , France
The French University of Pau et des Pays de l'Adour (UPPA), Anglet Campus (SW of France), is offering a scholarship for a 3 years PhD position starting in September 2014. International students are also eligible for this scholarship.

About the scholarship:

The coastal research team IVS (Acronym for Wave Structure Interaction in French) performs research in coastal engineering with a special focus on coastal and structure response to extreme wave events such as storm or tsunami. This group is offering a PhD fellowship available to conduct research on the topic "Numerical modeling of waves generated by subaerial landslide. Application to rock slides and pyroclastic flows”. Position starting on September 1st, 2014. This PhD is part of a National project and a European project on tsunami hazard.

Study:
The PhD study will be based on the numerical model THETIS which solves the Navier-Stokes equations for multiphase flows. The objectives is to better understand and predict the waves which may be generated by subaerial slides. The work will be separated in two parts :
1- rock slides : a new and original method based on the fictitious domain approach will be developed to simulate the slide composed of several rocks. An important part of the work will consists in modeling the chocks between the rocks. Then the model build will be compared to existing experiments and used to better understand the physics involved.
2- Pyroclastic flows : the student will try to simulate the complex physics involved in this case based on the multipĥase model, taking into account heat transfers and phase changes which may play a role in the wave generating process.
Eligibility
- M.S. degree or equivalent in Fluid Mechanics, Mechanics, Coastal Engineering, Physical Oceanography, Geophysics with experience in numerical simulation.
- Programming experience (Python and/or Fortran).

Application
Please send a cover letter and a CV to Prof. Stéphane Abadie
Deadline of application April 15th 2014
