A candidate with suitable experimental data analysis and numerical modelling is sought in the world leading Pennine Water Group hydraulic laboratories at the University of Sheffield (www.shef.ac.uk/pwg). The post holder will work in support of a recently funded EPSRC project “Experimental and numerical investigation of pluvial flood flows and pollutant transport at and between system interface points”. The project aims to improve modelling tools in order to provide a more accurate evaluation of both water quantity (for example flow velocity, flood extent) and quality (contaminant transport) processes during urban floods. This will be achieved by analysing new experimental datasets from a unique scale model facility which describe surface/subsurface flow interactions at manhole structures, flow profiles in shallow surface flood flows and mass transport processes within flood events.
The successful applicant will be responsible for communicating with research staff conducting hydraulic and mass transport experiments and data collection, analysing the datasets produced by the experimental programme of work, and utilising these datasets to develop and validate numerical modelling approaches to describe flow and mass transport processes in urban floods.
The post holder will also undertake secondments to project partners at the University of Exeter (UK) and the University of Bochum (Germany) in order to liaise and develop new modelling approaches with numerical modelling experts. The successful candidate will also be encouraged to interact with collaborators and to take an active role in engaging with the industrial project partners and the wider Pennine Water Group.
Applicants should demonstrate the ability, experience and enthusiasm for research into hydraulics and should have relevant experience in the modelling of flooding/flood risk or other similar free surface flows. Experience in numerical flood modelling methods, data analysis and/or mixing processes is desired in any applicant.
This post is fixed term for a period of 35 months.
