PhD candidate 'Environmental fluid mechanics', Wageningen, the Netherlands
Job description
This vacancy concerns a project of the research programme 'RiverCare: towards self-sustaining multifunctional rivers', recently funded within the so called Perspectief Programme of the Dutch Science and Technology Foundation (STW). In RiverCare five universities and many public and private parties collaborate to get a better understanding of the fundamental processes that drive ecomorphological changes, predict the intermediate and long-term developments and develop best practices to reduce the maintenance costs and increase the benefits of interventions. It is a combination of fundamental research on the hydrological, geomorphological and ecological processes, applied research in river management and utilisation of the knowledge in serious gaming. The river restoration projects currently carried out in the Netherlands (for instance in the Room for the River programme) provide a unique opportunity to achieve these objectives and use the results to develop or improve models and develop guidelines and tools that can be used for river management in the Netherlands and abroad. The present vacancy concerns a PhD position in the project 'Optimizing Longitudinal Training Dam Design'.

Requirements
An academic with an MSc degree in environmental sciences, physics or any other discipline with a strong fluid mechanics component to work on a PhD project 'Optimizing Longitudinal Training Dam (LTD) Design'. In The Netherlands, the replacement of series of river groynes by LTDs is considered to be a key measure to prepare the Dutch rivers for the next century and beyond. The selected candidate will develop the scientific knowledge needed to optimize the design and management of longitudinal training dams in terms of navigation, flood protection and ecological rehabilitation of regulated rivers, from a fluid mechanics perspective. The key questions to be addressed include: Which are the local physical processes governing the exchange of water and sediment between river sections divided by one or more LTDs? How do alternative planform schematizations of the LTD affect the regional hydrodynamics and riverbed developments? The PhD candidate will adopt a quantitative approach of field data analysis and laboratory experiments, and will work in close collaboration with the other PhD candidate in the project, who focusses on ecological rehabilitation of regulated rivers.

Further requirements:
Proven interest in environmental fluid mechanics, proficiency in computer programming (e.g. Matlab), excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work efficiently alone as well as in a team. Contributing to the overall RiverCare programme is mandatory, as is collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat and Deltares. Experience with handling large-scale data sets and a strong quantitative background is preferred (signal processing, statistics). Experience with field work and/or laboratory experiments is an asset.
Conditions of employment
A full-time appointment (1.0 fte, 38 hours/week) for a period of 18 months with extension of 30 months, starting approximately in December 2014. Salary ranges from € 2083, in the first year to € 2664, (gross) in the fourth year based on full-time employment.
