IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

PhD Student Position at the iICBM Research Institute, University of Oldenburg, Germany
The Microbiogeochemistry group and the Physical Oceanography (Theory) group at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg (Institute for Biology and Chemistry of the Marine Environment), offers a PhD-position (TVL E13/75%) related to the joint project „Development of a technical system to remove CO2 from combustion effluents by using a limestone flour suspension reactor, optimisation and ecological evaluation.“ The scientific focus will be on CO2 storage by transfer of CO2 into alkalinity to potentially modify ocean acidification and/or to remediate acidic lakes.
We are looking for an environmental scientist with experience in modelling or a physical modeller with experience in analytical chemistry (master degree or diploma). Additionally, the candidate should have expertises in programming languages, like FORTRAN and MATLAB, Linux operating systems and parallel cluster environments.
The candidate will be responsible for the analysis of relevant chemical parameters to optimise a mobile demonstration plant for CO2 elimination from combustion effluents in cooperation with other groups of the joint project. The major scientific task of the candidate will be the application of an unstructuredgrid hydrodynamic modelling system coupled to a chemical module to investigate the ecological consequences of the discharge of the resulting bicarbonate-rich waters on aquatic flora and fauna of lakes and the coastal ocean.
The position will be filled first for 1 year with the possibility of prolongation for up to 3 years and it is aimed at achieving a Ph.D. degree.
