Vacancy Researcher/advisor River Dynamics, Delft, the Netherlands

Deltares is a leading independent institute in the fields of water, subsurface and infrastructure. We apply our advanced expertise worldwide, to help people live safely and sustainably in delta areas, coastal zones and river basins. Our unit Inland Water Systems, department River dynamics and inland water transport, is looking for a  Advisor / Researcher River Dynamics  who will help to achieve our ambition to establish a national and international reputation as top expert of inland water systems.

The job: 
Your main activities are to:

  • work on challenging projects related to river dynamics, navigability and impact studies;
  • perform specialist advice and research in the field of hydrodynamics, morphology, navigation and sediment dynamics;
  • use, develop and validate numerical models such as SOBEK, WAQUA, Delft3D and Baseline to calculate hydrodynamics, morphological behaviour and sediment dynamics;
  • assist in innovative applications of the latest technology and products in this field;
  • actively increase the network and cooperation of the department with other groups inside and outside of Deltares.

Your profile:

  • you have an MSc or PhD in Civil Engineering, Applied mathematics, Fluid mechanics or similar;
  • you have excellent analytical skills and experience in numerical modelling;
  • you have good theoretical knowledge on physical processes such as hydrodynamics and morphodynamics;
  • you take initiative, you are enthusiastic and innovative;
  • you like to work in teams and deliver a high quality service for our customers;
  • you are a good (national and international) networker with a pro-active approach towards the market and are willing to travel and work abroad.  

The team: 
The unit Inland water systems consists of more than 125 employees working in five departments: Freshwater Ecology and Water Quality, Catchment Hydrology, Water Risk Analysis, Operational Water Management. The River dynamics and Inland water transport department is formed by approx. 20 enthusiastic professionals. In R&D and non-standard consultancy projects we combine practical relevance with high standards for quality. We achieve this by continuous development of state-of-the-art knowledge and techniques, translation towards (innovative) applications combined with a high level of client interaction.

 Typical projects of the department River dynamics and Inland water transport relates to:

  • management and improvement of river navigability and fairway maintenance;
  • sediment management and morphological behaviour in rivers, reservoirs and canals;
  • development and impact of scour holes in river beds;
  • hydrodynamic behaviour of river flooding;
  • nautical requirements for inland waterways;
  • morphological analysis and assessment of flood protection, navigation and ecological rehabilitation in rivers;
  • use of river dynamics to improve sustainable spatial planning, economic and ecological values and assets;
  • optimization of river banks and the construction of side channels;
  • bank erosion, reservoir sedimentation, optimization of flushing processes.
