Senior Research Engineer Microfluidic Sensors, UK

About the role :
We seek a talented design engineer to drive further innovation, development and commercialisation of our current and future microfluidic sensor technologies and to be the lead consulting engineer for these technologies.

You will join an existing team of forty research staff, engineering staff and graduate students equipped with world class fabrication, testing and design facilities together with instrumentation and analytical laboratories and access to sea going and polar research logistics.

You will lead the design of in situ (i.e. deep sea submersible) microfluidic sensors through innovation and by improving current prototypes for marine and other hostile environments. This will include chemical (e.g. nutrients, carbonate (via pH, pCO2, DIC, TA), trace metals) and biological (e.g. cytometer, nucleic acid analyser, immunosensor) sensors. This sensor technology is deployed at sea, in coastal areas and in polar regions. These sensors provide data for use in environmental and climate modeling, in industrial applications such as Carbon Capture and Storage and for improving our understanding of the world’s oceans. You will work in a research team publishing the research widely, interacting with our commercial partners (e.g. licensees of our IP) and constructing funding proposals.

This post is offered on NERC terms and conditions and is available for 3 years.

Salary:
£28,200 - £36,737 per annum


About you:
We seek applicants who have a proven ability in solving research, engineering, manufacturing and organizational problems. A PhD in Instrumentation Engineering R&D / design or closely related discipline or equivalent research experience in an academic or industrial setting is essential. Experience of microfluidic systems and biological or chemical sensors would be advantageous. You will have a broad spectrum of skills and have a flexible approach, demonstrating your ability to deliver solutions to complex problems and to quickly master new techniques.
