IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

PhD Position at University of Auckland, New Zealand

A PhD position in nearshore hydrodynamics and pattern formation (3 years) is open at the School of Environment, University of Auckland (Auckland, New Zealand). The project will focus on the analysis of an extensive set of laboratory experiments to study the formation and disappearance of patterns in surf and swash zone hydrodynamics (i.e. standing edge waves). The project will involve detailed data analysis and numerical modelling (Fortran or C) to investigate the properties of hydrodynamic pattern formation and compare theory with laboratory experiments.

The project requires a student with a research BSc (Hons) or a research Masters degree with demonstrated skills in timeseries analysis, fluid mechanics, numerical modelling and an understanding of coastal physical processes.

Applicants should also have demonstrated English language proficiency (if English is not your first language, TOEFL or IELTS scores should be submitted with your application if available). Review of applications will begin on June 20th and continue until the position is filled.

The student would join a vibrant coastal group, working and living near some of world’s most beautiful landscapes.

Interested applicants should contact the principal investigator (Giovanni Coco, g.coco@auckland.ac.nz) for informal queries. Applications should include a one-page statement of interest (in English), curriculum vitae, and contact information of two referees. Please submit applications to g.coco@auckland.ac.nz.
