Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) studentship, Loughborough University
An EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) studentship is available at Loughborough University's Centre for Hydrological and Ecosystem Sciences to evaluate the capacity of low-cost micro Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for enhanced flood modelling, flood risk management and emergency response. The project will consist of three interrelated threads of activities, including: (i) field-based data gathering using small UAS; (ii) image processing; (iii) numerical modelling of flood inundation; and (iv) GIS-based analysis of emergency risk response and management. The candidate is expected to evaluate the use of UAS before, during and after a flood event on an opportunistic basis. Data will be processed using image processing software. High-resolution flood inundation modelling and risk impact analysis will be undertaken. Closing date is August 5th 2015. This PhD project will link with existing research projects on flood risks in Loughborough University. The PhD student will be jointly supervised by Dr Dapeng Yu and Dr David Graham from Geography, and Professor Wenhua Chen in the Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering. This project  offers  the  candidate  an  excellent opportunity  to  work  with  the purpose-designed UAS in AAE, state-of-art image processing software available in Geography, and latest generation of  inundation models developed in Geography. A close collaboration between the Department of Geography, the Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering, and stakeholder organizations is at the core of this project. Dr Yu is a physical geographer with over 15 years of experience in flood risk management and GIS, in particular flood modelling and risk assessment. Dr David Graham has extensive experience with data collection using UAS and image processing. Professor Wenhua Chen leads the Autonomous Systems Laboratory, which will provide a strong technical support for this project. The project will also explore engagement with stakeholders, some of which the supervisors have worked with before.
