IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Scientist - IMPREX, Berkshire, United Kingdom
ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. This data is fully available to the national meteorological services in the Member States. The Centre also offers a catalogue of forecast data that can be purchased by businesses worldwide and other commercial customers. The supercomputer facility (and associated data archive) at ECMWF is one of the largest of its type in Europe and Member States can use 25% of its capacity for their own purposes.

ECMWF is one of the 24 partners in the IMproving PRedictions and management of hydrological Extremes (IMPREX) research project funded by the Horizon 2020 programme of the European Union. For a better anticipation of future high-impact hydrological extremes disrupting the safety of citizens and overall economic productivity, IMPREX will improve forecast skill for meteorological and hydrological extremes in Europe and their impacts. As a key outreach product, a hydrological risk outlook for Europe will be produced.

The ECMWF contribution to IMPREX covers a number of research topics, including seamless hydrological predictions for monthly and seasonal time scales, developing novel warning indicators for floods based on ECMWF products including the Atmospheric Rivers Extreme Forecast Index, post-processing and calibrating meteorological forcings for hydrological forecasts. The successful candidate will work in the Forecast Department (FD) in close co-operation with a team of scientists involved in evaluation and applications of weather forecasts. Interaction with the Land Surface group at ECMWF is also envisaged. He or she will be responsible for developing the Atmospheric Rivers Extreme Forecast Index, post processing methods of meteorological variables for hydrological applications, and monthly to seasonal hydrological forecasts.
