Post-Doc vacancy in urban flood modelling, University of Sheffield, UK

An enthusiastic candidate with suitable experimental data analysis and numerical modelling expertise is sought to undertake an ambitious programme of research in support of EPSRC grant ‘Experimental and numerical investigation of pluvial flood flows and pollutant transport at and between system interface points’ (EP/K040405/1). The overall aim of the project is to use datasets from a unique scale model urban drainage facility in order to assess and improve the accuracy of existing urban flood models and extend modelling capabilities to include the simulation of pollutant transport within urban flood events.

The post holder will undertake secondments to project partners at the University of Exeter (UK) and the University of Bochum (Germany) in order to liaise and develop new modelling approaches with numerical modelling experts. 

The main duties and responsibilities of this post include:-

  • Analysis and interpretation of datasets resulting from the experimental programme of work, drawing of conclusions to support the validation of urban flood models, and quantifying transport and mixing processes in urban flood flows.
  • Development of new coupled 1D/2D modelling approaches to describe linkages between sewer and surface flows in urban flood conditions, and to describe the transport of solutes in urban flood flows, validating with experimental data.
  • Writing supporting documents to contribute to journal publications of the work of the Research Group.
  • Reading of academic papers, journals and textbooks, and attending conferences, to keep abreast of developments.

It is essential that applicants have a first degree in a relevant area (or equivalent experience) and a PhD (or any equivalent experience) in Civil and Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Maths or another relevant discipline. Also essential are a background in numerical methods, for example, the diffusion wave approach and shock-capturing finite volume schemes and/or experience in modelling urban flood wave propagation using coupled 1D/2D methods. Applicants must have excellent IT skills and programming experience, including software such as FORTRAN, MATLAB and/or PYTHON.
