Understanding liquid phase heterogeneous catalysis to develop catalytic processes.
Applications are invited for a 3 year Research Associate (PDRA), fully funded via support from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, to be conducted in the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science in the University of Manchester and the UK’s pulsed neutron and muon facility (ISIS) based in Oxfordshire. This post is associated with a collaborative project involving the University of Cambridge, Queens University Belfast, University of Manchester and ISIS, and aims to develop the world’s first combined NMR/neutron scattering diffractometer which will provide a route towards understanding mass transport during heterogeneous catalytic processes.
The aim of this project is to bridge the knowledge gap between understanding the properties of liquids confined in the pores of typical heterogeneous catalysts and their applications. For example, diffusion processes as well as adsorption are critically important in determining the selectivity of these multiphase reactions. However, within the pores of the catalyst in liquid phase reactions it is difficult to evaluate their relative contributions as the observed global kinetics are a combination of surface reaction kinetics as well as mass transport.
The PDRA position available at Manchester/ISIS will be to develop the in-situ neutron scattering and spectroscopic techniques to understand the liquid-liquid and liquid-solid interactions during heterogeneously catalysed hydrogenations. In addition, the researcher will work closely with the team at the University of Cambridge to develop a combined in-situ low-field NMR/neutron diffractometer at ISIS.
The project requires a highly motivated, imaginative candidate, with strong interpersonal skills who is a good communicator and able to work well in a multi-disciplinary team.
