IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

One year post-doctoral position on wave and wave-current modelling, University of Caen Normandy, France

The development of tidal energy in France requires a strong knowledge of the hydrodynamic of Alderney Race where are the mostly energetic tidal currents of the Western Europe (up to 12 knots). NORMANDIE HYDRO plan to install a pilot tidal farm in a couple of years. The HYD2M project (P.I. A.-C. Bennis, http://hyd2m.criann.fr/) aims to study the effects of wave-current-turbulence interactions on the tidal energy estimate through an international research collaboration between industrial and academic partners (Naval group, EDF, OpenHydro, U. Caen, FEM, ULCO, CNRS, Ifremer, SHOM, U. Plymouth, U. Sheffield). At the same time, a part of the SEMARIN project (P.I. D. Lemosse), funded by Region Normandie, aims to improve the wave modelling, with an application to the Alderney race.

First, the post-doctoral researcher will evaluate the unstructured implicit version of WAVEWATCH III (Tolman et al., 2014 ; Roland et al., 2012 ; Ardhuin et al., 2009) developped by Roland et al. (2017). Second, he/she will implement a method allowing the forcing of WAVEWATCH III by shear flows. Lastly, this work will be a part of the 3D fully-coupled wave-current model MARS-WAVEWATCH III (Bennis et al. 2011, Bennis et al. 2014, Bennis et al. 2016). Simulations at high spatial resolution (less than 10 meters) will be carried out to study wave-current-turbulence interactions. A large set of data (HF, X-band and in-situ measurements) collected during HYD2M experiments will be available to validate numerical simulations. Simulations will use computational resources of CRIANN.

Competences and skills :

Coastal oceanography, Marine renewable energy, Tidal seas, Numerical modelling, Wave modelling with spectral models (eg. WAVEWATCHIII, SWAN, TOMAWAC), Wave-current interactions modelling, Programming skills (Fortran 90, Python, Matlab), High performance computing.

Person specification :

We seek to appoint a post-doctoral researcher, with a recently obtained PhD or equivalent experience, to contribute to the following deliverables of SEMARIN:

- Wave and wave-current modelling at high resolution in tidal seas.

- Contribution to reports, conferences abstracts, conference proceedings and peer-reviewed publications.

- Organization of workshops, meetings and conferences within SEMARIN and work with HYD2M partners.
