M.S. Ghidaoui is the Chinese Estates Professor of Engineering and Chair Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST). His general interests are in the fields of hydraulics, water resources and environmental fluid mechanics. In particular, unsteady friction and turbulence in waterhammer; defect detection in pipes using waterhammer (transient) waves; numerical modelling of surface and closed conduit flows; and stability of shallow shear flows. Currently, he leads a large-scale theme-based project on smart urban water supply systems (Smart UWSS).
He is the editor of the Journal of Hydraulic Research, IAHR and served as its associate editor for 15 years. He is also the associate editor of the Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, ASCE; and Journal of Hydro-environment Research, IAHR-APD. He is an editorial board member of the Theoretical & Applied Mechanics Letters (TAML), Chinese Academy of Sciences and The Chinese Academy of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and served as an advisory board of the Journal of Hydroinformatics for 12 years. He is the chair IAHR’s Technical Committee on Fluid Mechanics. His awards include the Arthur Ippen Award, IAHR; the Albert Berry Memorial Award, American Water Works Association; and Hilgard Award for best paper (runner-up), Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, ASCE. He received the Outstanding Faculty Award, HKUST. In addition, Prof Ghidaoui received two teaching excellence awards from the school of engineering at HKUST.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jochen Aberle took over the professorship "Hydraulic engineering and water morphology" and head of the hydraulic engineering department at the Leichtweiß Institute for Hydraulic Engineering on August 1st, 2017. He studied civil engineering with a specialization in hydraulic engineering in Karlsruhe and received his doctorate in 2000 from the University of Karlsruhe (TH) on the topic "Investigation of the roughness structure to determine the flow resistance in mountain streams under clear water runoff".
After two years of post-doc work in New Zealand at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), he worked from 2003 to 2012 as a research assistant at the Leichtweiß-Institut für Wasserbau at the TU Braunschweig. In 2012 he received a call to the Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway, which he left back in 2017 for a full professorship at Technische Universität Braunschweig.
He is Associate Editor of Journal of Hydraulic Research (Taylor & Francis), the flagship journal of IAHR.
Dr. Anna Łoboda graduated from Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, where she received a Master degree in Hydraulics Engineering. Currently, Dr. Łoboda works at the Department of Hydrology and Hydrodynamics at the Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences, where she became an assistant professor after receiving PhD degree in 2018. Her dissertation, entitled "The influence of the seasonal variability of biomechanical properties of selected plant species rooted in flowing waters on flow resistance", was defended with honors. The complexity of the biomechanics of aquatic plants rooted in flowing waters described in the dissertation is a step towards explaining the complex issues of the biomechanics of aquatic plants rooted in flowing waters.
Dr. Łoboda holds the position of the President of IAHR Young Professionals Network Poland since the beginning of 2020. Her research interest involves eco-hydraulics: plant biomechanics, riverbed dynamics, flow-biota-sediment interactions, fluvial remote sensing.
