Abstract: spillway is an important structure in a hydropower station. Physical model tests show that building a diversion pier cannot visibly decrease peak flow at the contraction section behind the pier, but increases position-induced peak flow. Complexity in the flow pattern of a two-hole scheme is caused by boundary conditions. On the basis of the volume of fluid method, we study the flow characteristics of the spillway in an original design scheme and single-hole scheme by 3-D numerical simulation. The numerical computation results for the flow characteristics of the two schemes agree with the experimental results, confirming that the final optimized scheme (single hole) presents a better flow pattern than does the two-hole scheme.
