Tide-Driven Controls on Maximum Near-Bed Floc Size in a Tidal Estuary

Abstract: Abstract: Determination of the size and settling velocity of particles in an estuary is important to predicting many environmental issues. Suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and turbulence mainly affect tidal variation of floc size. These influential factors as well as physical properties of fluid were observed in four cross-sections along the mid-reaches of theōta Diversion Channel, Hiroshima, Japan, during turning of a spring tide. Flocculation process found to be mainly controlled by turbulent motion and SSC. Maximum floc size was observed through the first half of flooding tide that is associated with resupension of the loosely Turbulent shear over lengths governed by Kolmogorov length scale? kescalated the maximum floc size while? k (27) 500μm. Salinity did not appear to automatically enhance flocculation.
