Abstract: This work is addressed to the study of dam-break situations in presence of bed-steps. Beyond the intrinsic importance of these flows, the interest in this topic arises from the fact they can be considered as particular Riemann problems. Recently this subject has been analyzed from a theoretical point of view by several authors in the framework of the 1D shallow-water approximation. In these works, in order to close the problems, some assumptions have been proposed but their validity is controversial. Therefore the aim of our work is to supply experimental data that may help to clarify this issue. Here we present the capability and the limits of our experimental facility and the strategies we have develop to obtain reliable measurements. We also show the preliminary results of some tests as well as a tentative effort to interpret them in the framework of the shallow water assumptions.
