Abstract: 1-D modeling still remains a widely used approach for flood propagation analysis, especially in rivers with low sinuosity and reasonably prismatic floodplains. Despite of its importance, the papers concerning the flood routing in natural compound channels are very few. In this work a number of practical aspects concerning the flood propagation in compound channels are discussed. In particular the attention is firstly focused on the management of the boundary conditions and, consequently, on the evaluation of flow regime that, according to the characteristic based approach, also depends on the Boussinesq coefficient and its variation over water depth. Three methods are considered herein to analyze the influence on the prediction of the flow regime. Finally, a numerical application of flood propagation in compound channels is shown.
