Abstract: This paper establishes a framework which couples a quasi 2D numerical model with probability density functions in order to predict the lateral distribution of instantaneous bed stresses in a simple prismatic channel. These distributions are compared to standard sediment transport formulae in order to establish the probability of sediment transport. The work is purely theoretical and provides an insight into the complex coupling which occurs between the hydrodynamics of the flow and the transportation of sediment.
