Abstract: In this paper, the underflow of a sluice gate in a weir upstream wall is analysed. In this case both the effect of gate slope and side contraction should be considered. After a short review of the literature, dimensional analysis allowed definition of the variables involved in the problem. An experimental study was then carried out, pointing out the differences with the case of vertical sluice gate and suppressed side contraction. Finally, an equation for the discharge coefficient variation was obtained, separating the case when the effects of viscosity and surface tension can be neglected, so that the equation can be used for full-scale cases.
