Abstract: A 2D morphological model is implemented in the central part of the Gironde estuary, where drastic accumulation has been observed, downstream of a large sand bank. A better understanding of the sand dynamics is achieved by combining numerical modelling and in-situ measurements. A 6-month run is performed considering bed load transport, coupled with suspended load, and correction of the convection velocity. The bed evolution predictions are extrapolated and compared with the 5-year bathymetric evolution. This method yields accumulation in good agreement with the observed shoal formation.
