Abstract: The dam-break problem is not a continuous flood wave problem. Traditional numerical models for open channel flows are all based on St. Venant equations while the basic assumption in St. Venant equations is that the water flow is continuous. Therefore, the traditional numerical open channel models cannot reasonably simulate dam-break problems. In this paper, a new numerical model is proposed based on integration of BGK Boltzmann equation which governs the molecule motion. There is no continuity assumption in the model. It is shown that the proposed numerical model can accurately and stably simulate dam-break problems.
