Abstract: This study aims to clarify the vegetation growth condition of Kushiro Mire. The mire area has been reduced in recent years, causing the problem of changes in the mire’s innate vegetation conditions due to the rapid increase of the alnus japonica forest area. The scientific causality on the increasing area of the alnus japonica forest has not been clarified. Therefore, this study conducted vegetation classification by focusing on the groundwater level and ground level. In this classification, the random forest method was used to calculate from explanatory factors the explanatory variables that are strongly related to classification results. This has produced a high percentage of correct answers (70.0%).
