Abstract: Fish migration along an open channel flow is considered as a biological action resulting from the minimization problem of an interaction energy functional, which is a new characterization of the phenomenon. We show that an appropriate functional can explain the empirical elliptic school shape whose oblateness depends on the flow speed. The model parameters are identified for a school of juvenile Plecoglossus altivelis (Ayu). Issues to be resolved for practical application of the present mathematical model to evaluation of fish migration in open channel network flows are also discussed.
