Abstract: This paper describes the results of a preliminary study on the optimization of mowing strategies for vegetated streams. A simplified model, based on a logistic growth curve and the Belanger equation for backwater curves, was developed and applied to a stream in the Netherlands. An empirical relationship was derived for the vegetation coverage and Manning’s roughness coefficient. The model can be used to optimize the mowing strategy, but only when the desired condition can be reached by mowing. Otherwise, other measures should be taken or new criteria need to be defined.
