Abstract: The seasonal variability of surface heat budget terms throughout the whole ice covered period at the Saroma-ko lagoon was studied analyzing measurement data collected in Kimuaneppu Cape years 1998-2004 and2006-2009. The usability of the Kimuaneppu weather station data to estimate the surface heatux of the ice surface was veried by comparing the surface heatux calculated after in-situ station measurements to those of calculated after Kimuaneppu weather station measurements. The correlation of daily averages was found to be over R> 0.83 in all three years observed. The heatux terms were analyzed separately for years with long total ice covered period and years without total ice cover. It was found that during the years when long ice covered period was observed, the main dierence to the typical years was in the longwave and sensible heatuxes during January. At the same time in the years without full ice cover, the longwave and latent heatuxes were found to be above average. From the analysis of the melting period it is postulated that the main reason for the similar ice breakup times in dierent years is due to the dierences in net shortwave radiation. The average date in period 1998-2009, when the total heatux changes from negative to positive, was found to be 25th of March at the Saroma-ko lagoon.
