Abstract: For fish living in cold, snowy regions, their wintering habitat is known to strongly influence their survival rate for the following year. While some surveys have addressed the wintering environment of high-value commercial fish such as salmon and trout, few studies have considered the wintering environment of benthic fish found in ordinary rivers. Surveys of the living environment, including the wintering environment, of benthic fish in swift current rivers with gravel beds, were carried out to examine how changes in the physical habitat were reflected in quantitative measurements such as fish populations.
