Abstract: Multiscale heterogeneity is an inherent characteristic of geological media. It is an important factor governing flow and solute transport processes in the subsurface. A detailed site characterization requires tools that can detect the heterogeneity over a large volume of the medium so that costly and invasive sampling can be avoided. Due to lack of such tools, our knowledge of site-specific subsurface geology has been limited. Progress in our predictive ability and understanding of flow and solute transport processes in the subsurface have subsequently been hampered.
