Abstract: Complementary to experimental work in compound open channels, a comparable zone of interaction between main channel and flood plain flows may also be engineered in a closed duct of the cross-sectional geometry illustrated in Figure 1. The horizontal plane of symmetry having zero shear stress is analogous to the free surface, so that the model of a two-stage channel is provided by either the upper or lower half of the duct. The open circuit wind tunnel is a comparatively cheap and simple arrangement, in which the cross-sectional geometry is more easily controlled than the corresponding normal depth in a compound channel. Whereas in an open channel it is not possible to measure the velocity or turbulence fields right up to the free surface, the corresponding measurements on the horizontal plane of symmetry of a duct are routine.
