Abstract: A channel section has propensity to establish and maintain an equilibrium or quasi-equilibrium state that corresponds to a value of Shannon's entropy (Chiu and Said 1995). In natural channels, such a state is probably established by the channel-forming "bankfull discharge" (Leopold and Wolman 1970). Under the Shannon's entropy concept, the intuitive notion of the tendency for entropy to increase is interpreted probabilistically into a framework amenable to logical analysis. The concept can be applied in hydraulic engineering to complement the rational hydrodynamics which can deal with only the observable aspect of a physical process in the space-time framework.
