Abstract: Ice cover thawing in rivers and navigation canals can be accelerated by increasing the water temperature and velocity. This finding is used for shortening the winter navigation break or for limiting the dangerous breakup of ice cover. In order to affect and control efficiently the ice cover thawing, the understanding of the thawing process and its mathematical description are essential. Our contribution includes the theoretical analysis of the ice cover thawing caused by flowing water in an open trapezoidal channel, the description of the development of the ice cover melting in a stream including its mathematical expression.
