Experimental Study on Microjet Induced Vortex in the Near-Wall Region

Abstract: In high-speed flow, a low-pressure zone will be formed near some solid boundaries such as propellers and overflow dam surfaces, and steam bubbles will gradually grow and be transported to high-pressure zones to collapse. During this process, the microjets produced by the collapse of cavitation bubbles focus energy onto the solid surface, causing erosion damage. In this paper, an electric discharge machine and high-speed photography technology were used to capture the different eddy current states generated by the collapse of millimeter-scale cavitation bubbles at different relative distances γ. When γ=1.15, the vortex motion extending along the normal direction of the wall appears after the microjet impacts the surface; when γ=1.37, the induced vortex motion extends tangentially along the wall after the cavitation bubble collapses. The in-depth study of microjet-induced wall vortices provides new insights into the practical application of cavitation.
