Abstract: Several outfalls discharge treated sewage directly to the nearshore of the Jeddah area in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Water quality issues were identified in the vicinity of the existing outfalls due to the fact that in some emergency situations raw sewage is disposed and these outfalls are located in shallow areas or inside lagoons. Thus, it is important to determine the area impacted by the outfalls to ensure that the levels of nutrients will not be exceeded in the vicinity of sensitive areas. In this study a three dimensional finite element model (RMA) is used to model temperature, salinity and water quality in the vicinity of the outfalls. The hydrodynamic module includes the tidal and wind induced currents where the tidal boundaries are determined from a full Red Sea model. The model results showed that the current locations for the outfalls are not adequate if raw sewage is disposed.
