Study on Growth Response of Salix Koreensis Cuttings Under Water-Logging Condition

Abstract: To verify plants used for riparian vegetation maintenance and extensive water environment restoration, the growth response of Salix koreensis commonly found along the rivers in Korea was analyzedunder different water- logging conditions. As for test conditions, a non-turbid water-logging group and a turbid water-logging group were organized together with a control group not under waterlogging condition and experiment was conducted under the complete flooding condition. The trees were measured of their heights, leaf numbers, leaf lengths, greenness and dry masses and the measurements were used in analysis. The test result indicated that non-turbid water-logging for less than 30 days brought positive impact to the growth of S. koreensis. On the other hand, it was found that turbid water-logging, if lasting even for ten days, rapidly impeded the growth of S. koreensis. The damages by flooding under non-turbid and turbid water-logging conditions for 30 days or less displayed the trends of rapid and gradual recovery respectively when the trees were placed under the same condition as the control group. Some S. koreensis survived even after 30 days under turbid water-logging. Therefore, S. koreensis is considered applicable to forestation of some parts in high water beds submerged in water during flood season. Based on the result, it is concluded that S. koreensis can be used for extensive water environment restoration.
