Phil H. Burgi Best Paper Award

Founding Statement

The Phil H. Burgi Best Paper Award rewards the best technical paper presented at the IAHR International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures (ISHS). 

The Award was launched in 2018 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the IAHR technical committee on Hydraulic Structures

Named after the first chair of the Technical Committee, Philip H. Burgi, the Award was delivered for the first time at the 7th International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures in Aachen, Germany.

Rules for the administration of the award

The best technical paper presented during the International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures will receive the Philip H. Burgi Best Paper Award. Suitable papers will be selected prior to the symposium regarding their scientific content, innovation and impact as well as their linkages with hydraulic structures.

The Award winner will be selected among selected papers after oral presentations and will be announced during the ISHS.

5th Philip H. Burgi Best Paper Award 2026 awarded during the 11th International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures (ISHS 2026) 

Ismail Albayrak for the paper entitled “Influence of Secondary Currents on Hydro-Abrasion at the Solis Sediment Bypass Tunnel" co-authored by Pauline Haver, Elena Pummer, Dila Demiral Yuzugullu and Robert Boes

4th Philip H. Burgi Best Paper Award 2024 awarded during the 10th International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures (ISHS 2024) 

Lisa Burghardt for the paper entitled “Multi-lab investigation of the effect of debris composition on bridge clogging during floods"

3rd Philip H. Burgi Best Paper Award 2022 awarded during the 9th International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures (ISHS 2022) 

Mauricio Angulo, Arturo Rivetti, Cecilia Lucino and Sergio Liscia for the paper entitled "Anti vortex device to operate pump intakes below the minimum submergence" and Akash Jaiswal, Zulfequar Ahmad and Saroj Mishra for the paper entitled "Effect of diameter and inlet-depth on hydro-suction performance of a suction pipe"

2nd Philip H. Burgi Best Paper Award 2020 not awarded due to COVID-19 

1st Philip H. Burgi Best Paper Award 2018 awarded during the 7th International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures (ISHS 2018) 

Svenja Kemper and Andreas Schlenkoff for the paper entitled "Numerical simulation of intake structures like street inlets with supercritical flow conditions"
