Prof. Panayiotis Diplas appointed new editor of JHR from January 2024

Prof. Panayiotis (Panos) DiplasProf. Panayiotis (Panos) Diplas has been appointed as the new editor of the Journal of Hydraulic Research (JHR) from January 2024 replacing Mohamed Ghidaoui who has served in this role for the last seven years.

Panos Diplas is currently the P.C. Rossin Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Lehigh University. He joined Lehigh in 2013 as Department Chair and served in that capacity until 2020. Prior to joining Lehigh University, he taught at Virginia Tech for 25 years and at the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, for two years. In 1999 he founded the Baker Environmental Hydraulics Laboratory and served as its Director for 14 years. More recently, he revamped the experimental capabilities of the Imbt Environmental Hydraulics Laboratory at Lehigh by adding state-of-the-art equipment and instrumentation.

His areas of general research interest are environmental, fluvial, ecological, and infrastructure hydraulics. More specifically, his current/recent research activities focus on sediment transport and river mechanics, scour around bridge piers and other hydraulic structures, stream restoration, wetland hydrodynamics, ecological hydraulics, sustainable development, and marine hydrokinetic energy generation.

His work has been recognized by a number of awards, including the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the NSF (National Science Foundation), and the Hans Albert Einstein, Hunter Rouse Hydraulic Engineering, and Karl Emil Hilgard Hydraulic Prize from the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers). During the spring semester of 2007 he was the J.S. Brown Intertec Visiting Professor at the University of Minnesota. He has served on the editorial board of many journals and chaired several EWRI (Environmental and Water Resources Institute) and ASCE technical committees.
