The Journal of River Basin Management (JRBM) plays a specific role in promoting a cross-sectorial approach encompassing all aspects of river and floodplain management, with a truly global perspective. The Journal is a response by the scientific and professional community to the World Water Vision and calls for an integrated approach to water resources management.

The fourth Issue of Volume 21 of JRBM is composed of sixteen articles that report examples of river management from all over the world, showing the international and interdisciplinary character of the Journal.
Many articles proposed here address water quality problems, spanning from heavy metals to pesticides, showing how these problems correlate with the presence of humans in the investigated river basins. Besides that, flood-related problems and related solutions are presented, combining experimental investigations with modelling approaches.
Like the past Issues of Volume 21 of JRBM, all the manuscripts collected here are worth reading, as they clearly report and discuss the actual state-of-art in the management of rivers at multiple spatiotemporal scales, pointing out open questions to be addressed in the future by both researchers and water managers.
