Technical Committee on Ice Research and Engineering: 2023 Report

IAHR Technical Committee on Ice Research and Engineering

Meet the IAHR Technical Committee on Ice Research and Engineering   Keep updated

Who we are?

We direct research and engineering efforts mainly toward a better understanding of ice and how best to manage it, aiding in the solution of ice-related problems affecting strong economic and environmental interests, maintaining and promoting active cooperation between the research community and industry in ice hydraulic engineering, and recognizing the importance of applied research.

What we do?

Annual meeting of our committee | June 12-14, 2023. Glasgow, UK

This was a hybrid meeting held during the POAC’23 conference.

IAHR Working Paper - Water and climate change adaptation

Our committee provided one chapter to the working paper sent by deputy director Tom Soo to the UN group to contribute to the COP meeting.

Migration of our Symposium’s proceedings

Our committee helped IAHR’s Secretariat in its effort to migrate all the past proceedings of our Symposium (1970-2022) onto a web interface. For the older proceedings, individual papers had to be extracted from all pdf documents. Collectively, this led to the migration of about 2700 papers.

Activities in Future Years

27th IAHR International Symposium on ICe27th IAHR International Symposium on Ice

June 9-13, 2024. Gdańsk, Poland

Our committee is coordinating the 27th edition of our next ‘Symposium on Ice’, which will be held from 9 to 13 June 2024 at Gdańsk University of Technology (GdanskTECH), Poland. The Symposium will cover a large number of research topics in ice engineering and applied sciences, for river, lake, coastal and oceanic environments, while also addressing climate impacts. The themes are as follows:

  • River, Lake, and Reservoir Ice

  • Sea Ice

  • Ice Mechanics and Hydraulics

  • Ice Interaction with Structures

  • Shipping in Ice

  • Environmental and Ecological Consequences of Climate Change in the Cryosphere

  • Special Session on Baltic Sea Offshore Wind Development – chaired by Hayo Hendrikse

Nearly 150 abstracts have been submitted. The registration will open starting in January 2024. All papers will be reviewed – this process will involve the participation of our committee members.

Annual meeting of our committee

Our committee’s annual meeting for 2024 will be held during the Symposium in Gdańsk.
