It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Professor Miguel Ángel Losada Rodríguez last Monday, February 26, at the age of 76 (Salamanca, Spain, 1947), he who had always maintained a fruitful relationship with our association and had been the tireless promoter of the XXXIX World Congress of IAHR which took place in Granada (Spain) in 2021.

Professor and Engineer M.A. Losada obtained the degree in Civil Engineering in 1970 and his PhD in 1976, both from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, (Spain). Throughout his life he worked extensively on both a professional and academic level in the field of engineering and maritime research and in its environment.

At the beginning of his career he worked at the Ports Laboratory (now the Center for Ports and Coastal Studies) of CEDEX and at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, later moving to the University of Cantabria (1978-1997), where he was a Professor of Civil Engineering, the Director of the Department of Ports and Maritime Structures, and finally the Director of the School of Civil, Canal, and Port Engineers of that university. In 1997, he moved to the University of Granada, where he was Professor of Civil Engineering and finally, Professor Emeritus of said university.

Along with his teaching and research activity, he was the founder of various research groups, both at the University of Cantabria and at the University of Granada, from which he created and directed the Andalusian Environment Center (CEAMA) and the Flow Dynamics Research Group.

Among his contributions to port and coastal engineering, his contributions to the Recommendations of Maritime Works (ROM) of the Public Ports of the State of Spain are noteworthy, as well as his work as a designer in various port and coastal areas and his over 400 publications in scientific and technical journals.

Among the various national and international awards that he received, the National Civil Engineering Award stands out, awarded in 2018 by the Spanish Ministry of Public Works. Along with this award, it is also worth highlighting the Medal of Honor from the College of Civil Engineers, Canals, and Ports (1990) and the International Coastal Engineering Award from the American Association of Civil Engineering (ASCE).

He was a member of various national and international scientific and technical associations (IAHR, PIANC, ASCE, ...) and a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering of Spain, as well as of the Advisory Committee of the Spanish Ministry of Public Works.

All this fruitful professional, research, teaching and dissemination activity leaves behind a singular contribution in the field of coastal and port engineering and its environment, as well as in the sphere of education; Professor and Engineer M.A.

Losada contributed to the training of many generations of engineers and scientists in the aforementioned fields.

For all these reasons, we at IAHR express to his family, friends, and relatives our deepest condolences for the loss of one of the great Spanish engineers and scientists who greatly contributed to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the field of maritime engineering.
