Remembering Professor Dr Stanislav Pejović

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Professor Stanislav Pejović. Professor Stanislav Pejović died on 29 April 2020 at the age of 87. Prof. Pejović, PhD, was a full professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, head of the Department of Hydraulic Energy, and Chair of the Board of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Belgrade. Since 2002, he was a part-time professor at the University of Toronto and at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. He was an International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) professional engineer and an ICC expert in arbitration.

Dr. Pejović was an expert in hydraulic energy and hydraulic machinery, lecturing on specialized subjects related to energy, design of power plants, thermodynamics, physics, fluid mechanics, and hydraulic transient analysis (water hammer, vibrations, hydraulic oscillations, stability, resonance in technical systems and human blood vessels). He was a member of the IAHR technical committee on Hydraulic Machinery and Systems (previously the section on Hydraulic Machinery and Cavitation), a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Hydro Power technical committee and a member of the International Editorial Committee for Book Series on Hydraulic Machinery.

Prof. Pejović designed 3 test rigs, 20 power plants, pumped-storage plants and pumping systems, completed hydraulic transient and vibration analysis of 34 hydraulic large size machines and systems, and developed the model acceptance tests of 11 rotating (turbo) machines, field tests of 14 power plants and 7 acceptance tests. He led numerous final field tests as a chief engineer. Prof. Pejović also developed computer simulations of the transient and hydraulic vibration of several systems utilized in the Monitoring of Radioactivity in Effluent and Environment (Ontario, Canada), and in the design of Bajina Bašta Pumped Storage Power Plant (Serbia), Storage Pumps Lisina, the Big Hanaford Combined Cycle Plant, as well as in the Water Cooling System (USA), the Cooling Water System of Thermal Power Plant, Obrenovac (Serbia), Cooling System, PPN (Pillaiperumalnallur) Combined Cycle Power Plant (India), and Water Distribution System of Belgrade.

Prof. Pejović was a prolific academic who authored and co-authored 19 books and textbooks, 120 technical papers and 8 computer programs. He will be remembered as the author of specialized books on hydraulic transients and vibrations: ‘The Rules for Hydraulic Transient Design Analyisi’ with prof. Dr A. Gajic, Academic Mind 2018, ‘Guidelines to Hydraulic Transient Analysis’ with Dr A.P. Boldy, and Dr Obradović, ‘Guidelines to Hydraulic Transient Analysis of Pumping Systems’ and ‘Hydraulic Transients of ASME Guide for Mechanical Design of Hydroelectric Plants’ prepared by the ASME Hydro Power technical committee.

As a mentor and professor, Dr. Stan Pejović transferred his knowledge and experience to many generations of young engineers, leading several of them to the title of Doctor of Philosophy.

At the University of Belgrade, Prof. Pejović taught courses on Hydro Power Plant and Pumping System Design, Theory of Turbomachines, Hydraulics and Hydraulic Machinery. At the University of Toronto, he delivered a course for the first time in North America entitled the ‘Design of Hydro and Wind Electric Plants in 2008 and 2009’. Supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Prof. Pejović spent two years in Germany at the University of Braunschweig, and the University of Hannover. He also taught at the University of Hong Kong and Singapore as a visiting scholar.

He designed the pump storage plant Bajina Bašta in Serbia, at that time the highest head plant in the world. Prof. Pejović was an internationally recognized scholar and the recipient of many awards, such as the Honoris Causa of the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada in 2006. Dr. Pejović was a licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.

Within the IAHR community, Dr. Pejović will be remembered as the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 15th IAHR Symposium held in 1990 in Belgrade, Serbia (former Yugoslavia).
